The IP addressing scheme is built on classes of addresses. The class of address is determined by looking at the number in the first octet looking from left to right. IP addresses contain two parts, the network portion and the host portion. The number of bits in the host portion determines the number of IP addresses we can have in our network. Understanding the IP addressing scheme is very important to becoming a good network administrator.
